The short version
Your Google Business Profile is the free listing that shows up on the map when someone in your town searches for what you do. It's not your website. It's not your Facebook page. It's the thing Google shows first — the name, the number, the hours, the photos, the reviews, the pin on the map.
If you only fix one thing, fix this.
Why it matters more than your website
Here's the truth nobody tells you: most people never visit your website. They search "plumber near me," look at the map pack — those three listings at the top — and call one. If your listing is bare, wrong, or unclaimed, you're not even in the running. The guy with a packed listing and 40 reviews gets the call, and his website could be garbage.
Your website matters. We build them. But the Google listing is the front door. You don't build a nice kitchen before you hang a front door.
What a good one looks like
- Claimed and verified. If you haven't claimed it, you don't control it. Anyone can suggest edits. Wrong hours. Wrong number. Get it claimed.
- Right categories. "Plumber" is a start. "Emergency plumber" and "Gasfitter" tell Google exactly what you do so you show up for the right searches.
- Service area set. List every town you'll drive to. People search "[trade] [town]" — you want to show up for all of them.
- Photos. Real ones. Your truck, your crew, finished work. A listing with 20 photos beats a listing with 2 every time.
- Reviews. This is the big one. More on that in its own article.
- Posts. Google lets you post updates — a job you finished, a seasonal offer. It keeps the listing fresh and tells Google you're active.
What it costs you to ignore it
Every call that goes to a competitor because their listing was better set up is a job you lost to free software. There's no ad spend involved. There's no website to build. It's a free listing that most trades never finish setting up.
Fix it first. Then worry about the rest.
