The short version
Google Ads puts you at the top of the search results — above the map pack — and you pay every time someone clicks. Done right, it's the fastest way to get the phone ringing. Done wrong, it's a hole you pour money into.
When ads are worth it
Ads are worth it when:
- You need calls now. SEO takes months. Ads work the day you turn them on. New business, slow season, a new service area — ads bridge the gap.
- You're in a competitive market. If there are 30 plumbers in your town and your listing is new, ads put you at the top today while your listing and reviews build.
- You can track what they cost you. If you know a customer is worth $800 to you and a call costs you $20, the math works. If you don't know either number, you're gambling.
When ads are a waste of money
Ads are a waste when:
- You're paying for the wrong searches. Bid on "emergency plumber [town]" and you get calls. Bid on just "plumber" nationwide and you pay for clicks from people three states over looking for a job.
- Your listing is bare. Ads send people to your listing or your site. If that's empty or broken, you paid to send them to a dead end.
- Nobody's watching the spend. Set it and forget it and you'll spend $1,000 on clicks that never called. Ads need a human checking them.
- You can't answer the phone. Ads make the phone ring. If you can't pick up — or call back fast — you paid for leads you wasted.
The honest part
We run ads for clients. We don't mark up the ad spend — you pay Google directly and you see every dollar. But ads are a tool, not a solution. If your listing, your site, and your reviews are a mess, ads just send people to a mess faster.
Fix the foundation first. Then ads can be the fastest thing in your toolbox.
